Adriving rainstorm threatened to dampen the mood on an unmarked softball field at Deerwood Elementary School last month. But the goodwill games went on as the Orange County Public Schools Faculty and Spouse Flag Football League crowned its inaugural champion.

UCF pitcher breaks C-USA softball mark

Senior pitcher Allison Kime set a new Conference USA record on Saturday, breaking her own school record in the process, when she pitched 15 consecutive innings against conference foe East Carolina at the UCF Softball Complex. Last season she set a new UCF record of 12 consecutive innings pitched against both ECU and Florida State.

Knight recognized following upset win

It’s been an exciting month of softball for the Knights at UCF as a milestone was reached for head coach Renee Luers- Gillispie and a conference honor was awarded following a recent win over a ranked opponent. With a 3-2 win over UAB, Luers- Gillispie registered her 500th career victory as senior Allison Kime struck out nine batters and allowed just two runs on six hits.

Lacrosse earns recognition

FHSAA to host first championship

After years of knocking at the door, lacrosse gets the state championship treatment next month as a recognized sport when titles are on the line at West Orange High School. The road to the Florida High School Athletic Association championship begins on Monday during district play, while the state finals are slated for April 18-19 in Winter Garden.

Knights record first no-hitter in 35 years

With the bases at Jay Bergman Field dyed green in celebration of St. Patrick’s Day, two UCF pitchers accomplished a feat not attained at the school in 35 years. Mitch Houck and Austin Hudson of Boone High School combined for 18 strikeouts to pitch the school’s first nohitter since 1973 when the then-No. 16 Knights blanked Wagner, 6-0.

Cougars reclaim Metro title

It didn’t take long for Greg Harper to take a slumping weightlifting program at University High School and return it to the head of the class in Orange County. Last week the Cougars, who hosted the Metro Conference Tournament, had two individuals earn top honors in their respective weight classes and three others take runner-up en route to dominating the competition.

Getting defensive

Predators make changes; win three straight

After two straight losses to start the Arena Football League season, the Orlando Predators are currently riding a three-game winning streak. It seems that despite its most glaring weakness — defensive football — progress is being made. Heading into the Preds’ road game at Columbus last weekend, Orlando was near the bottom of the league in both scoring and total defense, giving up an average of 59.2 points and 316.8 yards per game.

Wolves never trail in win over Winter Park

When the final seconds ticked away last week at Lake Highland Prep, the celebration for the Timber Creek girls lacrosse team was just getting underway. At midfield the team gathered to embrace one another as head coach Randy Polito dove chest-first into the turf — soccer style — before players piled on top.
