Dogfight starts dialogue at Downey Dog Park

All Dave Sunnenberg could do was hold his dog as a pit bull dug his teeth deeper into its neck. Last Sunday was the first visit to Downey Dog Park for he and his wife, Jaime Candelori, with their two puppies — who weigh 40 pounds each.

GOAA: fuel farm nixed

But southeast residents remain skeptical

The Greater Orlando Aviation Authority has jettisoned plans to build 34 jet hangers and five million-gallon fuel tanks on wetlands near NorthLake Park. GOAA general consultant Schenkel- Shultz Architecture is currently hatching a new plan for the 1,324-acre GeeBee property just north of NLP, determining how this land can best serve Orlando International Airport and its neighbors.

Community pools time, money to help family

The Torres family was on the brink of homelessness. A disagreement with the landlord forced them to spend three sweltering summer months without electricity; they faced eviction from their home; and medical conditions rendered both parents unable to work. Just before Thanksgiving, word of the family’s plight spread through the Avalon Park community.

Residents talk trash

What type of garbage pickup do you want?

A series of community meetings is offering Orange County residents a choice in future trash pickup, including frequency and the use of manual or automated trucks. But one thing already is known for sure. Garbage collection will cost a whole lot more. Orange County is evaluating bids from potential trash haulers for a new seven-year contract, beginning in January 2009. The bids, however, cover a range of service options.

Police welcome

OPD’s SE substation offers neighbors more security

Only two Orlando police officers patrolled all of southeast Orlando, until now. Compare that to four squads of 10 officers, who will work a leased substation in the Moss Park shopping plaza. That means 10 officers will be available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
