"Bury the Dead" at the UCF Black Box Theater

The Kids R Kids Scholastic Book Fair is open to the community from Feb. 13-17. The more books people purchase, the more free books the school will receive. There will be an open house from 4-7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 14 with free popcorn.

The seventh annual Florida Living Historic Festival is from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 15 and Thursday, Feb. 16m at Fort Christmas Historical Park, 1300 Ft. Christmas Road, Christmas. Activities and exhibits include blacksmithing, cannon firing, pirate camp, trading post, Timucuan Indians, English encampments and will give kids first-hand knowledge of what life in Florida was like between the 1400s and early 1900s. Registration has started for the 2012 Relay For Life of Avalon Park. The event, which helps raise awareness and funds for the fight against cancer, is May 4-5 at Timber Creek High School. UCF Pegasus Health, the new medical practice where College of Medicine faculty physicians treat patients, is holding its inaugural Walk with a Doc at noon Tuesday, Feb. 14 at the UCF main campus. The mile-long walk around campus begins at Millican Hall.

The walk is designed to encourage participants to fit exercise into their daily lives and to provide an opportunity to meet doctors from the College of Medicine’s new health care facility. The first 100 participants to register will get an inaugural “Walk with a Doc” T-shirts and a pedometer. The primary care facility includes specialties such as internal medicine, family medicine, cardiology, geriatrics, infectious disease, sports medicine, rheumatology, nephrology, and neurology. Screenings of student films “My Fair Lidy” will be at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 16 and “The return of the Loch Ness Monster From Outer Space” will be at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 17 during the 17th Annual Valencia Film Celebration at the Performing Arts Center at Valencia College’s East Campus, located at 701 N Econlockhatchee Trail, Orlando. After each film screening, the producers and cast will hold a question-and-answer session with the audience.

“My Fair Lidy” is a drama that stars Christopher Backus as Lidy, a macho, blue-collar worker who, under the mentorship of “Miss Sal,” embarks on a journey of self-discovery and acceptance – by becoming a drag queen.

“The return of the Loch Ness Monster From Outer Space” is a beach blanket bingo, rock-n-roll, sci-fi comedy, featuring surfers, bikini queens and an appropriately “scary” Loch Ness Monster.

Theatre UCF presents Irwin Shaw’s “Bury the Dead”, an anti-war play about six soldiers killed in the line of duty who stand up in their graves and refuse to be buried. As their superiors fail at getting the soldiers to obey orders, the media starts to react, and so the deceased’s loved ones are brought to the graves. The soldiers explain their reasons for refusing to lie down in a series of touching monologues. The play runs in from Feb. 16-26 with shows at 8 p.m. Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays, and at 2 pm on Sundays at the UCF Black Box Theater. Computer Basics Level 1 is at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Feb. 13. Learn how to navigate the computer desktop and how to perform various techniques in manipulating windows using basic mouse and keyboard techniques. Recommended Audience: Adult.

Citizenship Inspired--Week 2 is at 5 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 14. Students will meet once each week for 4 weeks to prepare for the U.S. Naturalization (Citizenship) Test and Interview. Students will combine learning over the internet with in-class discussions. To be eligible for U.S. Naturalization, you must be able to read, write, and speak basic English.

Tiny Tales: Rhyme Time for You and Your Baby is at 10:15 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 16. These programs, especially for infants from birth to 18 months, last approximately 15 minutes. The rhythm and repetition of nursery rhymes are used to introduce very young children to literature. Hold your child in your lap and enjoy this special time together.

Whiz Kids: Internet Safety is at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 16. Be Safe: Learn safety tips and good practices when using the Internet.

Toddler Time is at 10:15 a.m. Friday, Feb. 17. Stories and activities for children aged 18 to 36 months. The programs last approximately 20 minutes. The use of picture books, finger plays, songs, poetry and Mother Goose rhymes, and flannel board stories will encourage the development of verbal and listening skills for this active age group.

Whiz Kids: Digital Photo Editing is at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 18. Add cool effects to your photos, such as cartoon transformations, image morphing, artistic painting and much more using an easy-to-use Web-based photo-editing application.

Family Focus: Create a Video Game is at 12:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 18. Recommended for ages 13 or older. Learn how to develop a game prototype using an Apple iMac in this two-part game design workshop.Part 1 is from 12:30-3:30 p.m. with a 15 minute break and Part 2 is Feb. 25 from 12:30-3:30 p.m. also with a 15 minute break.
