Let a mentor be your guide

The theme of our recent Re-Charge and Re-energize Your Job Search seminar seemed to be about getting a mentor to help guide you through your search and your career.

I have always had mentors throughout my career. I have reached out to people who were successful at what I wanted to be successful at and asked them to take me under their wing. This really helps you to focus and to be accountable. When I started in non-profit, I reached out to Angie Romagosa at the Sharing Center. We had a series of meetings, and I always left with homework. She was able to draw on her experiences and help guide me. Her advice and time has proven invaluable.

Having a mentor is a great way to be able to learn more about your field and validate what you already know. When I am learning something new or feel a bit out of my comfort zone, I reach out to people I know for recommendations for mentors.

We have several people on our team at Christian HELP who work with mentors to help them to become more knowledgeable in their jobs. I have found that it can be challenging to sit down and analyze what you are doing and how you should proceed, but eye opening as well.

We started adding coaches for employment in 2009, and this has led to several people getting jobs. It has not always been a short process, but knowing someone is there to guide you and give honest feedback can make a huge difference for you.

To find a mentor, reach out to people in your field who are successful, ask others for recommendations, and be prepared to do follow up work. Having a mentor will make a difference for you.
