Avalon Middle School students raised $273 for Step Up to Down Syndrome by donating $1 to wear a hat on Sept. 30. The money will be donated to support the Down Syndrome Walk and was organized by Juan Roman.
Primrose School of Avalon Park was recently presented with a plaque from Home for Heroes after the school raised $1,000 through school- and community-operated car washes.
Stone Lakes Elementary fifth-grader Chandler Dinh presented his self-created Disney picture to three Walt Disney World executives at the Sept. 13 Orange County School Board meeting.
The East River High School Chorus has been selected as honor choir for the 2011 Candlelight Processional and Massed Choir program at Walt Disney World Resort. Disney selects ensembles that were ranked with the top 20 scores of those within the six surrounding counties. The group is scheduled to perform at 6:45 p.m. and 8:15 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 25, Wednesday, Nov. 30, Saturday, Dec. 24 and at 5 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 27.
Roughly 100 students from Camelot Elementary were guided around campus by members of the women’s basketball, track and rowing teams as part of Destination College on Thursday, Oct. 6. The program is meant to prepare elementary-level students for college/work readiness.
Several Avalon Middle students had their art on display at the Orange County Public Schools Service Learning Program and Global Peace Film Festival. Congratulations to Binh An Nguyen, Olivia Elledge, Zoey Anderson, Cameron Mack, Simone Ritthisorn, Gina Wilkie, Tatiana Placer and Daniela Diaz. Binh An Nguyen won second place, and Honorable Mentions went to Olivia Elledge, Zoey Anderson and Cameron Mark.
Stone Lakes Elementary's Boosterthon, which has students run 25-35 laps while team members reinforce the character traits that the students have been learning all week, at 8:50 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 20 at the school, 15200 Stoneybrook Blvd., Orlando. East River Future Farmers of America participated in the Florida Cattlemen’s fourth annual Brisket Cook-off on Oct. 1. The team consisted of Nick Trask (10th grade), Callen McLeod (ninth grade), and Colton McLeod (12th grade).
About 45 Camelot Elementary parents and students turned plastic water bottles, bamboo skewers, paint and paper towel rolls into floral beauty at the school’s Family Art Night on Sept. 13.
Lindsay Lipschutz, third-grade teacher from Camelot Elementary, received a $250 dollar grant to purchase reading games for her before-school Breakfast Club, a 30-minute reading enrichment program open to all her students. 2010-11 FCAT data shows that the school’s third-graders are lowest in reading application and the reading comprehension games Lipschutz provides allow for additional practise.
Each month during the school year, Kiwanis of Avalon Park honors teachers from East Orlando schools with gift cards donated by local businesses. Each winner is presented with a plaque and has their picture hanging in each participating business. September’s winners are: Avalon Elementary’s Jacqueline Corn, Camelot Elementary’s Shannon Foley, Castle Creek Elementary’s Danielle Smith, Orange County Academy’s Jessica Federle, Stone Lakes Elementary’s Susan Armour, Timber Lakes Elementary’s Jennifer Wojcik, Avalon Middle’s Juan Roman, Lake Nona High’s Robert Halback, Orlando Christian Prep’s Julie Thomas and Timber Creek High’s Barbara Hall.
