I just interviewed three people for a job we are hiring for. I was the second interviewer for each of the candidates. I have to say I was impressed. I am struggling to figure out which one will be a best fit.
All of the candidates are overqualified, but have valid reasons for why they are interested in the position. They were well-prepared and did not stumble on the questions we asked. One of the candidates even made several observations about our work environment that were right on target.
I tell you all of this because there are some people out there doing all of the right things. They are prepared, they are polished and they are a fit. The problem is there is so much competition for the jobs that you can’t take it personally if you aren’t hired.
Last time I hired, I stayed in touch with the candidates. One still volunteers with us on a regular basis even though he now has a job. I know it is hard when many employers don’t think it is important to stay in touch with their top candidates, but there are ways you can stay connected.
If you are not chosen, write a follow up letter congratulating the employer on making a choice. Let them know you are still interested in the company if something else comes up. Also ask if they could recommend you to other companies they work with. Ask if they mind if you stay in touch.
Not every employer will stay in touch, but you never know where it will lead until you ask.
