Avalon Middle students Catherine Dixon and Maribel Lopez presented their views on how art and social studies classes can be integrated for better student learning at the Florida Council for the Social Studies convention.

The East River High School marching band traveled to the University Classic Marching Competition the weekend of Oct. 21 and won class 3A. The band competed the week before at Timber Creek High School.

Each month, Kiwanis of Avalon Park honors teachers from East Orlando schools with gift cards donated by local businesses. Each winner is presented with a plaque and has their picture hanging in each participating business. October's winners are Avalon Elementary's Glenn LaFountaine, Camelot Elementary's Jennifer Cieslak, Orange County Academy's Glynna Gilbert, Stone Lakes Elementary's Tara Lawrence, Timber Lakes Elementary's Marian Houston, Avalon Middle's Leann King, Lake Nona High's Melissa Linares, Orlando Christian Prep's Donna Burke and Timber Creek High's Robin Silverglate.

Avalon Middle students Julie Foroosh, Austin Logan and Azalia Samsam were selected as a 2011 Orange County District PRISM scholars. These outstanding science and math students were honored on Oct. 24 at the Orange County School Board meeting. Each winner received a voucher for a $250 U.S. Savings Bond from PRISM and a plaque to recognize their achievement.

Colonial High School will be honoring veterans at their last home football game this Friday, Nov. 11, in honor of Veterans Day. They will be honored before the game by the principal as well as fed by the PTSA in a special dinner during the game.

East River High School students Sheila Conde and Alexander Vazquez made the All-State Chorus this year. The All-State Choruses are highly select groups of choral students from Florida's junior high, middle and senior high schools who are brought together for the purposes of rehearsing and performing selected repertoire with guest conductors during the Annual FMEA In-Service Training Conference and Convention. East River has 11 students in the 100-person All-County Honor Choir.

Timber Creek High's career fair

More than 1,400 juniors and seniors and more than 65 universities, colleges and technical schools from around the state attended Timber Creek High School’s PTSA and Guidance Department’s 11th annual College and Career Fair on Oct. 5. Nearly a dozen restaurants and grocers in Avalon Park and Waterford Lakes donated food to provide a luncheon for the event.
