Alafaya construction problems

Share »

Dear Neighbors,

Here is an important Alafaya Trail Widening Project safety update. Several residents have expressed concern that the curve/lane shift just before the entrance to Stoneybrook Reserve is creating a challenging area for passing and turning vehicles.

Stoneybrook Reserve residents who travel south on Alafaya must turn left to enter their subdivision while cars traveling north tend to drift into the turning lane just as the curve begins because it is sudden. Some [residents] stated that they have witnessed some near collisions and it becomes particularly dangerous when trucks and buses pass this area.

Both [the Orange County] Traffic Engineering and Highway Construction Divisons are reviewing the contractor's maintenance of traffic layout and safety alternatives, which would include widening the lanes. Also, the [Orange County] Sheriff's Office has been contacted to perform daily enforcement of the posted speed limit.

As a resident of this area and daily driver on this road, I completely understand and appreciate your input. Action is underway to address and resolve this matter and I will update you as information becomes available. Thank you for your continued communication with my office and your patience during the construction on this road.

It is my pleasure to serve our community. Please drive with caution and stay safe!

Regards,

Jennifer Thompson
