Girls from Timber Creek High School participated in "Me and My Community", a mentoring program by Junior Achievement of Central Florida and Orlando-based Meiller Associates. On March 19, they worked with local professional women to provide creative solutions to issues facing Central Florida.

CAMP SCOOTER
Orange County Parks and Recreation will hold registration through April 8 for Camp Scooter, which is for grades first through fifth. The camp will be on weekdays from 7:30 a.m.-6 p.m. June 13-Aug. 12 at the following East Orlando parks: Bear Creek Recreation Center, Bithlo Park, Capehart Park, Meadow Woods Recreation Center and South Econ Recreation Center. SUPERIOR RATING FOR EAST RIVER HIGH AT DISTRICT MPA
The East River High School Symphonic Band received a superior rating at the District MPA, making it one of only 10 bands out of 35 to receive such a rating. East River was classified as an "A" according to the FBA, but the music was programmed at the "AA" level, the highest level. The band will now continue on to the state MPA at Ocoee High School on April 29.
RECIPES FOR HEALTHY KIDS
USDA announced the recipes chosen to advance in First Lady Michelle Obama's Recipes for Healthy Kids competition and the Roasted Fish Crispy Slaw Wrap, designed by Liberty Middle School, was selected to advance. Recipes for Healthy Kids encourages the creation of creative, nutritious, and kid-approved recipes that schools can easily incorporate into National School Lunch Program menus.
UCF IN FILM FESTIVALS
UCF students and faculty will be in some of the top film festivals this year, including UCF alum and visiting lecturer Andrew Gay’s feature film “A Beautiful Belly” at the Florida Film Festival; undergrad Edgar Jorge’s short film “A Coincidence of Sorts” to screen at the Florida Film Festival; UCF Film Associate Professor Christopher Harris’ new experimental film “28.IV.81 Descending Figures” will have its premiere at the Ann Arbor Film Festival and at Experiments in Cinema v 6.3; and UCF alum Brendon Kingsbury’s “One Over Wanderlust” will screen at the Tribeca Film Festival.
YOUTH ART MONTH
Student artwork is on display through April 4 at the OCPS Educational Leadership Center, 445 W. Amelia St., celebrating Youth Art Month. Several East Orlando schools — Avalon Elementary, Liberty Middle and Lake Nona High — participated in this year’s "Art and Music" exhibit. Hours are 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday-Friday.
UCF ETHICS BOWL PLACES FIRST
The UCF Ethics Bowl Team placed first in the National Intercollegiate Ethics Bowl Competition, defeating 31 teams from schools such as the U.S. Naval Academy, Dartmouth College and Clemson University. Topics such as computer hacking, immigration, academic dishonesty and racial stereotypes were discussed during the competition last week in Cincinnati.
INVENTION CONVENTION
Stone Lakes Elementary Enrichment students hosted their first “Invention Convention”, in which first through fifth-grade students studied an inventor who inspires them and then came up with their own invention, based on the needs of the community. Seventy-seven students demonstrated their ideas and products to parents and teachers at the convention.
EXPANDING YOUR HORIZONS CONFERENCE
This year, more than 25 Avalon Middle School girls attended UCF College of Engineering and Computer Sciences’ Expanding Your Horizons Annual Conference on Feb. 26, aimed at introducing girls to science, math and engineering careers.
CAMELOT ELEMENTARY AERONAUTICS CLUB WINS
Camelot Elementary’s fourth- and fifth-grade Aeronautics Clubs took home first, second and third place at glider competition called “See Joe Go” at Lockheed Martin during National Engineering Week. They were the only elementary school competing against area middle and high school teams. The team achieved the farthest glider flight recorded at 443 inches.
AVALON MIDDLE PRESENTS IN WINTER PARK
More than 39 Avalon Middle School students had their artwork accepted for display at the Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival, which took place March 18-20.

UCF EARNS TREE CAMPUS USA RECOGNITION
UCF has earned its first Tree Campus USA recognition from the Arbor Day Foundation. As part of the distinction, UCF Land & Natural Resources will plant about 300 new trees on campus to celebrate Arbor Day and the national honor. The recognition was celebrated during an Arbor Day award ceremony Friday, April 1.
