Kiwanis of Avalon Park food drive

East River High School’s marching band traveled to St. Petersburg last month to compete against 16 other semifinalist bands throughout Florida. They finished fifth in the state amongst all other division 3A high school bands.

The Kiwanis Club of Avalon Park, in combination with the Avalon Middle School Builders Club, Stone Lakes K-Kids and Timber Lakes K-Kids, completed their second annual food drive for the Bithlo/Christmas Community Center. They collected more than two truckloads of food for the center, which helps families in need.

Tricia LaChance's fifth-grade Sunrise Elementary class worked with the UCF biology department to restore dead oyster reefs. The students made 22 oyster shell mats, which will go to the Indian River Lagoon. Once the mats are in place, oyster larvae will begin to attach to the shells. The students are also working on activities to help prevent littering around school campus. They also labeled the storm water drains around the Eastwood subdivision to remind everyone that what goes down the drain ends up in our ocean.
