Doctors in training
The University of Central Florida’s College of Medicine welcomed its third class of medical students on Monday, Aug. 1, at a traditional “White Coat Ceremony,” in which medical schools recognize new students as colleagues dedicated to patient care. This year, the medical school is welcoming 80 new students, bringing its enrollment to 180. The College of Medicine will enroll 100 new students in 2012 and 120 new students in 2013 and each year after that, bringing its full enrollment to 480.
Thousands graduate from UCF
More than 3,200 UCF students graduated during two commencement ceremonies on Aug. 6, at the UCF Arena. This graduating class brought the total degrees awarded from the university to more than 221,000 since classes started in 1968. Students SOAR
Nearly 60 incoming UCF freshmen are a step closer to academic success thanks to a summer program that introduces them to the college experience. SOAR, Seizing Opportunities for Achievement & Retention, consists of tutoring, advising and classes to strengthen students’ core academic skills. Citizen of the Year
The Orange County District 4 2011 Citizen of the Year is East Orlando resident Sarah Dewitz of Just 1 Book. She was recognized at the annual Orange County Community Conference, which celebrates those making a difference in the community.
Kiwanis gets kids ready for school
The Avalon Park Kiwanis Club helped with Orange County Commissioner Jennifer Thompson’s backpack drive for needy students by collecting school supplies and filling backpacks.
