UCF football, Magic basketball and mascots

By J.C. CARNAHAN

With the month of August quickly approaching, UCF football fans are in for a treat as the Knights’ O’Zone Ticket Package returns for its second year. The purchase of season tickets in sections 119 and 120 in Bright House Networks Stadium’s north endzone gives fans an extra reward through a group of limited six-game ticket packages.

Among the perks of picking up a two- or four-season ticket package in those sections are official O’Zone game day T-shirts, an O’Zone Sports Pass package and a vintage, game-worn UCF football jersey, while supplies last. Included in the O’Zone Sports Pass packages are complimentary tickets to both UCF men’s and women’s basketball games along with tickets to other UCF athletics events such as baseball, softball and women’s volleyball.

Fans can get more information on tickets for the 2008 season by calling 407-823-1000 or visiting www.UCF Athletics.com. The Knights open their Conference USA title defense at home at 6 p.m. on Aug. 30 against South Carolina State. Other home games include meeting with USF (7 p.m. Sept. 6 ), SMU (Oct. 4 at 3:30 p.m.), East Carolina (8 p.m. Nov. 2), Southern Miss ( 3:30 p.m. Nov. 8) and UAB (3:30 p.m. Nov. 29).

Orlando Magic Basketball
The Scoop: It’s a signing that won’t entice the expectations of fans as that of Rashard Lewis a year ago, but the Orlando Magic think they got a “solid defender” with “versatility and athleticism” joining the team in guard-forward Mickael Pietrus. At 6-foot, 6-inches and 215 pounds, Pietrus comes to Orlando after coming off the bench in nearly all 66 games last season in Golden State.

He averaged 7.2 points, 3.7 rebounds and a steal in 20 minutes per game. The former first round pick (11th overall) in the 2003 NBA Draft has played in 310 games with the Warriors, averaging 8.6 points and 3.4 rebounds for his career.

The Magic also signed 11-year veteran guard Anthony Johnson to a deal earlier this week with the hopes of providing depth at the point guard position. At 6-foot, 3-inches and 195 pounds, Johnson averaged 5.6 points, 3.8 assists and two rebounds in 22.2 minutes last season with both Atlanta and Sacramento… Magic rookie draft pick Courtney Lee was recently selected to the 2008 Orlando Pro All-Summer League First Team, while Marcin Gortat was chosen to the league’s Second Team by on-line viewers at the conclusion of the six-team event.

Lee averaged 20.2 points in five games and Gortat scored 12.8 points per game and brought down 8.6 rebounds in leading the Magic to a 2-3 mark. Joining Lee on the First Team were Russell Westbrook and Jeff Green of Oklahoma City, Miami’s Michael Beasley and Brook Lopez of New Jersey.

Celebrity Mascot Games
The Scoop: The 16th Annual Celebrity Mascot Games returns to town with over 30 mascots from sports leagues across the country set to do battle in gladiatorthemed games to help determine the true champion of the sports world. Among the mascots planning to attend are Orlando Magic’s Stuff, Klaw from the Orlando Predators, Knightro from the University of Central Florida, Albert from the University of Florida, and many more. The best part about the event is that proceeds will again benefit New Hope for Kids, an Orlando-based not-for-profit organization that grants wishes to children under the age of 18 who are suffering from life-threatening illnesses. Tickets can be purchased at www.mascotgames. org for the two local dates at Amway Arena at 12:30 p.m. on July 25 and at 2 p.m. July 26.

TCHS Athletic Physicals
The Scoop: A new date has been set for athletic physicals for student athletes at Timber Creek High School wishing to participate in sports during the upcoming school year. Physicals will be given at the TCHS cafeteria from 6-8 p.m. Monday, Aug. 4. The cost of each physical is $20, which doctors will donate back to the sports medicine program. For more information, contact TCHS Head Athletic Trainer Heather Klein at 321-235-7833.

Central Florida Lacrosse Club
The Scoop: Boys and girls lacrosse summer league action is currently underway at Central Park in Eastwood for kids of all ages. The Central Florida Lacrosse Club (CFLC) is hosting 6-on-6 games through the end of August with instruction and gameplay led by high school coaches, players and CFLC league coaches. Games will be held every Wednesday from 6-8 p.m. at a cost of $20 per person. For more information about the Central Florida Lacrosse Club or to get registered, visit www.cflaxclub.com.

Hoop It Up Basketball
The Scoop: The 20th Hoop It Up Basketball tour recently got underway in Salt Lake City, as men’s and women’s teams of all ages and ability levels began vying for a spot in the World Championship in Miami during the weekend of Aug. 23-24. The 3-on-3 tournament comes to Orlando Aug. 9-10 at Amway Arena with a deadline to register set for Aug. 5 at 11 p.m. Adult Divisions registration is $154.50 and Youth Division registration is $129.50. Hoop It Up is committed to the widespread participation of the game of basketball at the grassroots level. To learn more or to register, visit www.hoopitup.com.
