The Bank of America Charitable Foundation has selected five high school students in Central Florida to participate in a leadership summit in Washington, D.C., July 13- 18, as part of its national Neighborhood Excellence Initiative (NEI).
Through their selection as 2008 Student Leaders, these outstanding young community leaders will join more than 200 students from across the country to learn how civic, nonprofit and business leadership work together to create a vibrant community and strong economy.
NEI recognizes high school juniors or seniors who have demonstrated leadership and a commitment to their community. As part of the program, the students will also participate in a paid, eight-week summer internship with a local nonprofit organization. Local Student Leaders that will intern at the Boys and Girls Clubs of Central Florida are Christina Nicolaides, a graduating senior from University High School and Kaley Wyker, a junior from Timber Creek High School.
“Through our Neighborhood Excellence Initiative and other national and local programs, Bank of America is helping to develop and inspire the next generation of leaders,” said John P. Moskos, market president, Central Florida at Bank of America.
“Recognizing these remarkable students and giving them the opportunity to learn more about leadership is pivotal to their future success and that of our neighborhoods. We are proud to support these outstanding Central Florida students.” At the Bank of America Student Leadership Summit, presented by the Close Up Foundation, these students will participate in a series of leadership sessions designed to engage, inspire and encourage them as future leaders.
While in Washington, D.C., the students’ experience will include:
• Visits to Capitol Hill, the Washington Monument, Lincoln Memorial, Library of Congress, and other historically important sites
• A leadership development discussion led by former Olympic gymnast Kerri Strug, who now works for the U.S. Department of Justice.
• Environmental, education and public policy workshop
