The Orange County Sheriff’s Office has made an arrest in last week’s fatal shooting at the Avalon Reserve apartments. Damien Lavon Hudson, 20, was arrested without incident on Sunday June 1 on Bethune Avenue on the city’s west side as a result of an ongoing investigation and surveillance by the Tactical Unit.
He is currently being held in the Orange County Jail without bond. The 25-year-old victim, John Wesley Latson, was shot and killed during a physical altercation with another man in the parking lot of Avalon Reserve off Avalon Park Boulevard, police said. Latson’s last known address was on Woodbury Road.
At approximately 7:56 p.m. on Tuesday, May 27, the Sheriff’s Office received several 9-1-1 calls in reference to a shooting at 14415 Avalon Reserve Blvd. Deputies arrived at the scene and found a man laying outside the Avalon Reserve apartments with at least one gunshot wound.
The victim was airlifted to the trauma center at Orlando Regional Medical Center, where he died. Witnesses told deputies that the victim had a fistfight with another man, who they said shot him in the upper torso and ran away, according to reports.
Deputies immediately established a tight perimeter around the complex. An extensive search for the suspect, aided by a helicopter, continued for several hours.
