District 4 Softball Tournament

By J.C. CARNAHAN

The Timber Creek softball team finished out the regular season unbeaten in both the Metro Conference and District 4 standings behind some impressive pitching and solid play in the field. The Wolves compiled an overall mark of 21-4 by shutting out 12 opponents, nohitting three teams, and one-hitting seven others during the year.

Leading the way has been the play of Brittany MacFawn on the mound and Dana Hathorn at the plate. MacFawn rolled through the season en route to a 14-0 mark with 141 strikeouts in 101 innings pitched.

She gave up just six earned runs (0.416 ERA) and 32 hits in all. Hathorn led the team in hits (37), doubles (12), runs batted in (25), runs scored (29), stolen bases (13), batting average (.420) and on-base percentage (.446), while also compiling a 6-4 record as a pitcher with 59 strikeouts to her credit. This week Timber Creek entered district play with a bye in the opening round.

Tonight they’ll match up with the winner between Colonial and Winter Park, at 7 p.m. at Winter Park High School. That game was played Tuesday night. The Grenadiers entered the tournament as the No. 5 seed with a 4-3 league mark and were hoping the recent success at a spring break tournament in Ocala would carry over into the postseason.

While competing at Belleview High School, CHS won the Silver Division with wins over Westley Chapel, Gulf and Vanguard. Colonial (15-10 overall) enters districts having won six of their last seven games, thanks in part to producing more extra base hits as opposed to earlier in the year. Leading the way have been the efforts of pitcher Lisa Heitz (1.88 ERA) and the bats of junior Elizabeth Beck (.358 batting average), freshman Madison Melle (.343) and senior Callie Davis (.318).

University faced Freedom on Tuesday as the No. 3 seed with a 4-3 record in districts. The winner is scheduled to take on either No. 2 Boone and No. 7 Cypress Creek today at 5 p.m. The Cougars (13-10 overall) have been playing their best softball of the season with mostly a young group of freshmen and sophomores leading the way.

Junior Aimee Halpin is among the team leaders in on-base percentage and leads the team in runs scored (18), doubles (6) and triples (2), while sophomore Courtney Hill is batting .388 with an onbase percentage of .449, and freshman Xio Perez has scored 18 runs, driven in 16 and has hit .378 in her first year of varsity play.

The winners of tonight’s semifinal games will meet up in the district finals at Winter Park on Friday at 7 p.m.The opening round of the regional tournament will begin Tuesday.
