Three Cougars place at states

Top-5 finishes turned in by senior, two junior wrestlers

By J.C. CARNAHAN

A third-place effort was registered by T.J. Sturgeon at 171 pounds, while Brandon Tressler ended his high school wrestling career with a fourthplace finish at 189 pounds. Eugene Scott finished fifth in the heavyweight division.

Sturgeon and Scott will get another shot at pursuing a state championship again next year as seniors. Over the past three years Tressler, who finished 37-4 as a senior, compiled an overall record of 108 wins and just 14 losses with two state runner- up medals and the fourth-place award he earned on Saturday.

He dropped a 15-4 majority decision to eventual state champion Javoris Wynte-Plain (Miami Southridge) in the second round, then lost to Caylor Williams (Palm Bay) 2 minutes and 41 seconds into his final match in the consolation round.

Sturgeon ended his season with a 38-2 overall mark after dropping a close 6-4 decision in the semifinals to eventual state champion Niko Brown of Osceola, then going on to pin Cameron Paterson of Douglas less than a minute into his consolation final.

Scott dropped a 5-1 decision to eventual state champion Michael Chinchilla of Miami Sunset in the semifinals, then was unable to get past American’s Henry Chirino to earn a spot in the consolation match himself. He went on to take a 3-2 decision over Charles Moore of Plantation to end the season with a 31-8 mark overall.

As a team, the three wrestlers helped University score a total of 42 points for 8th place, behind South Dade (189), Osceola (111.5) and Oviedo (84.5). Olympia finished 7th with 45 points, while Winter Springs came in 9th with 41 points.
