As undergraduate students in the UCF engineering department, Eric Williams and Michael Schulist earned little income and struggled to afford their commute to campus.

From his new office in downtown Avalon Park, Frank Silverman is surrounded by the sights and sounds of construction. There’s the laying of the foundation for the 45,000-square-foot Keith A. Ewing Medical Office Building, a three-story professional office building going up right next door, 11 live/work units taking shape in a row and the just-opened Fairwinds Credit Union.

Emma O’Halloran is the sort of girl who’s always had a soft spot for creatures who suffer: little kids with cancer, adults without homes, or elderly people without visitors. The Avalon Elementary fifth-grader comes by it honestly. Little Emma was always next to her mother, Linda, serving up soup to the homeless or making gift baskets for disabled children.
